Principal’s Report

Dear Families

Students have had many opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities this term.

Year 7 and Year 9 Camps

A highlight for Year 7 and 9 students was an overnight camp. Year 7 students attended Camp Banksia and Year 9 students were accommodated at Paton Park. Students had the opportunity to flourish and extend themselves in a safe and supportive environment outside of the classroom.

yLead

DHS once again hosted yLead in Week 3. yLead is a hands-on leadership development experience that combines team building with essential skill development for leadership groups. Student Leaders from surrounding high schools participated in the event.

Aspiring Leaders

Last week our Aspiring Leaders in Years 7 and 8 were selected. They will be organising school-based activities for their year group and floor level throughout their tenure. Congratulations to our recipients.

Cross Country

Cross Country and Ryda events were held over the last few weeks. The Cross Country event was held over two days with a junior and senior event. After the Cross-Country run students participated in activities designed to build house spirit and competition across Years 7-12.

Congratulations to students that were selected to represent DHS at the Inter-high Cross Country Carnival. Our team did exceptionally well placing third overall in Division 1.

RYDA

RYDA is a highly engaging and memorable one-day workshop which front-loads students’ understanding of road safety. This was held at Camp Clayton and aimed at our Year 10 students.

Senior Secondary 2026 Course Offerings

We have begun planning 2026 course offerings for our senior secondary students. We are considering offering a certificate 2 in Civil Construction to complement the Certificate 2 in Infrastructure and Resources students are currently studying. A suite of TASC courses to supplement the Cert 2 offerings for current Year 11 students is being explored.

Enrichment

You may have heard students talking about Enrichment. During term 1 Staff and students trialled a new way of working incorporating a weekly targeted session enabling, consolidating and enriching students’ skills in English and Mathematics. Enrichment is continuing across classes this term and students are embracing this new way of working with enthusiasm. Growth is evident in teaching practice and student outcomes.

Last Friday was a student free day. Teachers worked with Reece High School to moderate samples of work to ensure consistency of assessment across schools.

In Week 9 on Wednesday 25 June, we will once again hold an informal Open Arvo from 3.30-5.30pm. All Devonport High School families are invited to view the school and classrooms to see students’ work and evidence of their learning. On Tuesday 1 July, the week following the open Arvo, from 3.00-4.30pm three-way conferencing will be held for families with bookings.

We are looking forward to seeing you in person at our Open Arvo!

Principal’s Report

Dear Families

We are off to an amazing start this school year. It has been wonderful to see new and returning students settling into their routines, building friendships and embracing new learning experiences with enthusiasm. The energy and excitement throughout the school has been inspiring.

DHS staff have been working hard to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all our students from Years 7-12 and it’s evident that students are already growing and thriving. Growth is one of our DHS values we are focusing on this term.

Please follow our social media platforms to keep updated on student learning, activities and events. Water Safety, Swimming trials, NAPLAN and Year 9 Camp are fast approaching. Next week we are holding our first whole school assembly to acknowledge and induct our 2025 Student Leadership Team.

Students have been wearing the DHS uniform with pride and full school uniform is fundamental in supporting students to feel a sense of belonging. We are in our final year of transition. Any uniform purchases should now be in the Devonport City colours of navy blue and green.

Attendance is one of our school priorities and with your continued support in your students’ learning and attendance at school we are seeing an improvement in comparison to this time last year.

Thank you for your involvement thus far this year, your partnership is critical in making this year a success!

Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize

It brings us great pleasure to announce that Devonport High School's Henry Payne has been awarded the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize, 2025. Henry's entry was outstanding and we look forward to sharing parts of the audio-visual piece at an upcoming assembly. As part of the prize, Henry will travel with five other Tasmanian recipients to Canberra in February, followed by France and Belgium in April. The tour highlight will be the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Villers Bretonneux in France. Henry was presented with the Prize at a ceremony in Hobart.

Macy spoke about her experience as a recipient of the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize 2024, at the event. The audience was treated to recollections and insights into the group's experiences, from classroom to the Somme, as we heard of friendships formed, soldier's stories uncovered, and memories to last a lifetime. Both Macy and Henry have made Devonport High School very proud. Well done on speaking so confidently, Macy, and best wishes for an exciting 12 months ahead, Henry.

Principal’s Report

Dear families,

This year has been outstanding for our school community.

Annual data about our school’s recent achievements and improvement trend indicates our school is performing at a high standard and is continuing to trend upwards. The Family and Staff Satisfaction Survey indicated positive responses about our school above the TAS average and we succeeded in reaching our target of achieving above all schools in PAT Reading and PAT Mathematics, with significant growth.

Last week at our Presentation Evening we celebrated the outstanding achievements of numerous students and honoured our exceptional staff, whose dedication and hard work have been vital to our success this year.

Congratulations to the recipients of our Academic Excellence Awards for each year level. Year 7 Mabel Halley, Year 8 Evie Bellchambers and Sophie Rong, Year 9 Shomik Sinha and Year 10 Dux Award recipient Macy Deegan.

Throughout the year we have been working closely with local industries, the Mersey Leven Collective and our Year 10 cohort to determine how we can support learners to stay in school to Year 12 and attain their TCE. As a consequence, we have personalised our 2025 Year 11 and 12 Program to match the needs of a growing industry and student interest. We are excited to announce we have an additional 30 students continuing their education at DHS into Year 11 and 12. Students will be able to study fulltime on-site at DHS in a very much sought after, Cert 2 in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation (Civil Construction) and Learning through Internship.

We have secured funding for $46 000 from Vocational Learning for the acquisition of construction equipment for the Cert 2 in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation Pathway.

This week we celebrate our Year 10 students and wish them every success as they transition to Year 11 or enter the workforce.

We also farewell staff members Ms Lesley Jolly, Miss Kate Hambleton and Miss Tess Maxwell.
Ms Jolly is retiring after teaching fulltime for over 40 years. Happy retirement Lesley and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Miss Hambleton has accepted a teaching position with
T4 Engagement@Devonport and Tess will be continuing her teaching degree in Hobart. We wish Kate every success in her new role and thank both Kate and Tess for their contributions to DHS.

Finally, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our families. Your unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental in our students' success. Thank you for being our partners in education and for your continuous involvement in our school community. Your contributions make a significant difference.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you in 2025.

The class have been extremely busy making soap, toner, moisturiser, lip balms and body scrubs, all of which can be used by the students. All students are thoroughly enjoying the opportunity of creating products that are beneficial to individual skin care. In the near future the class will be making bath bombs, facial masks and candles.”  A very busy but extremely fun class to be involved in!”

Dear families

Spring has sprung with all seasons in recent weeks. Students and staff were out and about enjoying some of the sunnier days and milder temperatures until this last cold front!

Devonport High School students embraced 20 additional students from Kinmen County at school for a two-week study experience at the beginning of this term. This was a fantastic cross -curricular learning opportunity for Kinmen and DHS students. Five students from Devonport High School have been selected on the Outbound Study Exchange and will provide students with an immersive experience travelling to Taiwan and China.

On Wednesday 7 August we held a very successful Parent Information Evening for our prospective 2025 Year 7 students. We received some very positive feedback from our new families and students. Their enthusiasm for High School was evident.

Mr Wilson, Mr Lutwyche and Damian Peirce, Workforce Development, have been visiting and broadcasting to Mersey Leven Collective students, Devonport High School’s site offerings for Years 11 and 12. We are excited to announce a very much sought after Cert 2 in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation (Civil Construction), and Learning through Internship. Students will be able to study fulltime on-site at DHS.

The diagram below shows medium to high gains in Numeracy and Reading for Year 9 students, we are the selected school, where the line is trending upward!

In Week 9, on Wednesday 18 September we are planning to hold an informal Open Arvo from 3.30-5.30pm.
